Out and About
On 3rd June P1 to 4 went to Ballydevitt Farm to learn about farming and the Kilrea area. Their favourite activities were the pond dipping where they found water beetles and other minibeasts and playing hide and seek in the long grass which the farmer hadn’t cut yet. P1 and 2 had their last visit to Woodhall, along with the playgroup, who also held their sports day in the school grounds.
Walk Like an Egyptian
P5, 6 & 7 have been studying ancient Egypt and after using Marcus to practise their mummification techniques on they got to see the real thing on Thursday 27th May when they went to the Ulster Museum to see Takabuti, the only ‘mummy’ in Ireland. They also got to see and touch real Egyptian artefacts which are over 2000 years old.
Home and Away
P6 and 7 travelled to Bushmills salmon hatchery on Monday 7th June to see the next stage in the development of the fish. They had a very interesting day learning about the development of salmon and the dangers of pollution from things like farm effluent and detergents.
On Tuesday 8th June P7 travelled to Coleraine for a Be Safe talk to prepare them for their transition to secondary school. They are all very excited about going to a new school in September and although we will miss them we wish them well as we wave them off to Garvagh, Ballymena, Coleraine, Magherafelt and Ballymoney.
On Thursday 10th June Fireman Martin came to speak to P5 about fire safety. He even brought the fire engine and they had great fun finding out about all the exciting equipment which is kept on board.
On Monday 21st June our award winning technology team of Thomas Gordon, Thomas Irwin and David Linton went to the final of the STEM challenge at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast. Although they didn’t win any prizes they had a fantastic day and learned a lot about modern technology and industries in Northern Ireland.
Good Sports
The sports season ended on a high when the girls’ hockey team finished joint first at their last tournament. Teams of four P7 boys also competed at the Joey Dunlop Centre swimming gala and attended an athletics course at the University.
Special congratulations to Sophie Brown who was awarded player of the match at the last netball tournament and to Marcus Kelso, Adam Rowe and Peter Rankin who captained the football team at various times throughout the year.
The rest of the school got to join in when Portstewart football team coach Davy came to school on Friday 4th June and took each class for a session of football skills.
Additional congratulations to all of P7 who passed their cycling proficiency award with flying colours, thanks to the expert tuition of Mrs Anderson.
Fun, fun, fun
Although Thursday 27th June was a little damp, to say the least, that didn’t deter the crowds of children and parents who came along for a chat, a bounce, a burger and an ice-cream. The Ballymena motorcycle club also came along, as did the motorway police, and allowed everyone to see and even sit on their bikes.
Luckily the next morning was a little drier as Louise McClean, Tommy Collins and Fiona Watters came to talk to us about trees, plants and animals on our Eco-Day. We made some more objects for our willow garden which was then opened by Mayor Sandy Gilkinson. After a lovely picnic lunch we were lucky to have the rain hold off while we held our sports day and the day ended with ice-cream as everyone went off to enjoy a long weekend.
Euro Fest
As our 2 year Comenius project, ‘Preserving Our Worlds’ officially comes to an end this summer we decided to have a Euro themed buffet on Tuesday afternoon. As teams created pictures to depict their countries others completed a quiz on the EU and then everyone tasted foods from around Europe. Some of the smellier cheeses were not so popular but the frankfurters, salami, pain au chocolat and apple strudel went down a treat.
Kilwacky Races
Congratulations to our PTA team of driver Mr Donald Armstrong and pushers, Mr Stephen Hasson and Mr Adrian Shiels who took the Fairy Thorn Flyer to victory. Once again we had the fastest cart, clocked at 31mph but even better, we moved into first place overall. Move over Jenson Button!
Have a happy holiday!
