SNOW JOKE - IT'S ALMOST CHRISTMAS
As the temperatures drop and winter is upon us, it’s time for the usual Christmas festivities. The end of term is busy so don’t forget the big events coming up in the next couple of days.
Wednesday 19th December is CHRISTMAS DINNER DAY. £2.30 for turkey with all the trimmings. It’s a bargain.
Wednesday 19th December is also the CAROL SERVICE in St Patrick’s Parish Church at 7.30 pm. All family and friends are welcome to join us. Full uniform please—shirts, ties, navy skirts or trousers and black shoes. There is some spare uniform in the box in the hall but it will be first come first served.
Thursday 20th December is the LAST DAY OF SCHOOL. We hope Santa will have time to pop in and school ends at 12.15 p.m. No uniform today.
We’ll see you all again on Thursday 3rd January 2012 at 9.10 a.m.
Have a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
ROLL UP, ROLL UP! Enrolment is now open for September 2013. If you have a younger child who is ready for school or know of someone who intends to enrol their child, and have not received the forms, please contact Mrs Stinson or Miss Young in the school office. Forms are officially due in by 12.00 noon on 11th January 2013. Alternatively you can come along to our official ‘Open Morning’ on Saturday 5th January from 10-12.
CLASS UPDATES P1, 2 & 3 have been reading ‘The Owl who was afraid of the dark.’ They have been learning about birds and producing artwork with paints and fabrics as well as finding out about light and dark, which materials let light through and how to stay bright on dark winter evenings by wearing reflective clothes.
They also enjoyed their regular woodland walk at Woodhall to see the seasonal changes during Autumn and Winter.
Primary 4 & 5 have been learning about India. They have found out about the country, the weather, the animals, the clothes and some of their festivals. They have done artwork and read folk tales from India and next they are going to try some of the food.
They have also been learning about festivals around the world and have discovered that there are many festivals of light at this time of the year including Diwali, Hannukah and St Lucia's Day. Many of the celebrations are similar to how we celebrate, Hallowe’en and Christmas with fireworks, feasting and religious services.
Primary 6 & 7 have been learning about health and hygiene and why it’s important to keep ourselves and our clothes clean. They have also been doing some science and technology experiments, some with a Christmas theme. This included creating a Santa which can pop out of his chimney using air propulsion. The football team had another outing with the next round of the small schools tournament at Cullycapple Primary on Wednesday 21st November.
EXTRA, EXTRA!
It’s been a busy month with a lot of visitors. On Friday 14th December the playschool came to visit P1, 2 and 3 and were entertained by Buddy the Clown. P4-5 also had a visit from Ben Best who led a personal development session with games about working together.
P6 & 7 were joined by pupils from St Columba’s for a show presented by the Ulster Scots Agency. The P7’s then took part in a day of Young Enterprise workshops based on the global economy. Each team had to represent a country, buying and selling their products on the stock market and Kilrea Primary were delighted to beat all the competition to take first place.
The staff also went international this term when Miss Steele and Mrs Stinson attended a Comenius prep meeting in Muggio, near Milan, in Italy for a possible project beginning in 2013. (fingers crossed) This would involve the pupils learning music from different countries and cultures and linking up with schools around Europe.
The school choir also performed twice in the last couple of weeks; first at the switching on of the lights at Kilrea Diamond on Saturday 8th December and then in the Danske Bank on Tuesday 11th. Thanks again to all those who came out to support them and we look forward to hearing them again at the carol service on Wednesday night.
CHRISTMAS TREATS The whole school walked to St Paul’s on Friday 30th November to see their production of ‘The Sound of Music’ and the hills were certainly alive with the strains of ‘Doh-a-deer’ and ‘The Lonely Goatherd’. After an excellent show we were sorry to say ‘So Long, Farewell’ before the long walk back to school.
All the musicians in school will have the opportunity to display their talents to the rest of the pupils in a special musical assembly on Thursday when we will be treated to the strains of violins, clarinets, flutes and tin whistles. Please remember to bring your instruments with you.
CHARITY
Many thanks for your continued support of the PTA both at the AGM and the Autumn craft fair, which raised over £850. We have also donated over £200 to the British Legion Poppy Appeal and the Wings Appeal. Thanks again for your continued generosity.
