January 2009

Home Sweet Home
This term P1 and 2 have been studying houses and homes. They have taken photographs of houses on the Lisnagrot Road, built houses during play time and read stories such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears and the Three Little Pigs.
All about Me
P3 and 4 have been learning about their bodies and how they grow. They are exploring the five senses and what it might be like if any were absent. The story of Helen Keller has made them think about what it must be like to be blind and deaf and they have tried out some sign language.
Sky High
This month P5 and 6 have been investigating different kinds of buildings and structures. They have discovered which materials can be used, how they are designed and are now researching famous landmarks and architects from around the world.
Turning Japanese
The P7s have been extremely busy researching facts and figures for a project on Japan. They shared their findings with us in Assembly, and have begun making a display of Japanese figures in traditional dress. The highlight so far has been a day of culture when two Japanese students, who are studying in Coleraine, came to talk about their lives back home. They also led a number of workshops in calligraphy, kite making, karate and origami. All the P7s agreed it was a wonderful experience.
Visitors
In the first week of January, Mr Solomon Lubwama, who has been staying with friends in Kilrea over Christmas, came to visit. In assembly he talked to us about his home in Uganda and answered lots of questions before visiting each of the classrooms. He says he hopes to return to Kilrea some time in the future and we look forward to seeing him again. We also had two other special visitors to receive cheques, each for £165, to Diabetes UK and Save the Children. Both charities provide valuable help and advice to adults and children in Northern Ireland and throughout the world. Many thanks for your continued generosity.
¡Hola!
This week we were delighted to welcome our new Spanish assistant from Cuba, Mr Ivanio Rodriguez (Paco to the children). He arrived, wearing his Sombrero Mexicana and soon had all the Key stage 1 children greeting each other in Spanish and dancing to Spanish music.
Badminton Trials
Mrs Haslett has been coming to Kilrea on Tuesday afternoons to teach badminton to some P6 and 7s. For the last three weeks they have been learning to do forehand and overhead clear shots as well as backhand flicks. Next stop London 2012!
Out and about
P7 went to Coleraine Council Offices on Tuesday 27th January where they had a guided tour, took part in a debate on school uniform and witnessed the wedding of Adam and Shadea. Congratulations to the happy couple!

P5 and 6 also had a great time at a workshop run by Enterprising Futures where they tried out a new invention called an Apodo. This strange looking structure contains resources for lots of games and team activities to develop thinking skills and everyone agreed it was a really fun way to learn.
