The Cold Wind doth blow
P1 and 2 have been studying all kinds of weather. They have painted t-shirts for summer, made kites and windmills for windy days and even have their own polar penguin park in the playroom. They have also been on their second woodland walk at Woodhall to see how trees, plants and animals cope with changes in the seasons.
Yo Ho Ho
P3 and 4 have taken to the high seas this month to learn about water, ships and pirates. They’ve been building boats, drawing treasure maps and setting sail in the playroom. One or two even had to walk the plank. They are ending their topic with a special pirate day this week.
What’s the weather?
P5, 6 and 7 have been studying the extremes of weather and what a month to start, with weeks of snow and ice and temperatures of minus 8! They have been recording the weather, writing reports and finding out about hurricanes, droughts and floods. They’ve also been researching people who live in extreme climates.
Cash Corner
Your extreme generosity was in evidence again this month as we presented the proceeds from the carol service to two charities. Two cheques, each for £185, were received by Mrs Roisin McCaughan and Mrs Ann Laughlin respectively, to support schools in Malawi through the Zomba Action Project and for Save the Children. However in response to the tragedy in Haiti the children made a special change collection on Friday 29th the total of which, after a lot of counting, has already passed £320. Many thanks for your continued support.
Eco News
We had a great start to our new year when Coleraine Mayor, Councillor Sandy Gilkinson, came to present us with our sixth Eco-Flag, and congratulate us on being the first school in Northern Ireland to achieve this level of the prestigious award. The Eco-Committee was invited to a special reception in the mayor’s parlour where they had the chance to try on his gown and chain and sit in his special chair.

P7 joined pupils from Gorran Primary for a visit to Coleraine Council Offices where they met the mayor and toured the council chambers. They then had a debate on school uniform before Sophie and Mark tied the knot. Congratulations to the happy couple!
Sporting Heroes
The after-school club for this term was badminton and was well supported by the P7 pupils. Next half term it will be Tag Rugby.
We once again took part in the Credit Union Table Quiz and well done to both our teams, who came 2nd and 4th in the younger and older categories respectively.
Burns Night
A number of pupils performed at the recent Burn’s Night in Kilrea Orange Hall. Audiences were entertained with dancing as well as pieces on the violin, flute, clarinet, trumpet and euphonium. What a talented bunch!

Parent Interviews are on Monday 8th, Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th February. If you would like an appointment and have not received a time slot please contact your child’s teacher.
For those going on the P6/7 trip to Newcastle the next instalment of £35 is due before half term.
We are collecting Sainsbury’s tokens and box-tops again this year so we would greatly appreciate any you may have.
The fundraising dinner, in the shape of a Chinese Banquet for parents, friends and staff will be on Thursday 18th March 2010. If you want more information or want to book places please return your slip or contact the school as soon as possible.
The school will be closed for half term on Friday 12th, Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th February.
