Deck the (Assembly) Hall!
On Thursday 8th December the Christmas spirit really was a-plenty as preparations for our Diamond Anniversary Christmas Tree Festival reached fever pitch .
Trees were erected and decorated by all the classes in the school, to showcase the many aspects of today’s school curriculum, and by every club and organisation that has used the school over the last 60 years. There were trees made from all sorts of things including sports equipment, egg-boxes, books and pallets and there was also a Victorian tree to mark the opening of the first school on this site 150 years ago. On Thursday afternoon we received a visit from the Minister for Education, Mr Peter Weir, who met with representatives of the school and cut the ribbon to open the festival.
Over the next 2 days pupils, past pupils, parents and friends visited the school to admire everyone’s handy work, reminisce about their own schooldays and enjoy the refreshments provided by the PTA committee. Everyone agreed it was a lovely way to begin our year of celebrations and we look forward to the next big event in the calendar.
Of course the Christmas tree festival was not the only event which took place over the last couple of months.
On Friday 18th November we had a ‘Spotty Day’ for Children in Need. Spotty socks, ribbons and even whole outfits were on show and we also had a bouncy castle. The playgroup came to join us that day too, so it was a lot of fun and we raised £237 for Children in Need.
Some of the P4s went to a special activity day with Causeway Archers where they introduced a new resource for younger children. On their return they brought the equipment with them for us to try out in school. The rest of the P4 class have been the first to test it and all agreed it was a lot of fun. Keeping the scores is also good for the mental maths.
Wednesday 14th December was the carol service in Second Kilrea Presbyterian Church. The children led the service and once again the church was filled with family and friends. The collection, along with the money from Christmas Jumper Day, will be presented to Save the Children and ZAP in January. Thank you again for your continued generosity.
To finish off the festivities everyone enjoyed ‘Fun for All’ last Thursday and remember, a very special visitor may pop in on Tuesday 20th December to check you have all been behaving.
Many thanks for all your support of our Anniversary fund, the PTA and our many charity ventures this term including the Poppy appeal, Children in Need, ZAP, and Save the Children.
