Rumble in the Jungle
Dozens of parents, friends and relations packed into the assembly hall on Wednesday 25th June to see this year’s P7 perform their play on a jungle theme. Ably supported by the choral skills of the rest of the school the pupils provided a great night’s entertainment. Following a short interval Rev. McCormick and Mrs Stinson took to the stage to give their annual reports. The annual cups and awards were then presented by Mr Corscadden, former Principal of Cullycapple Primary, and everyone agreed that 2013/14 had been another very busy but successful year. Roll on September!
P7 had their own mini parents night with St Columba’s P7 pupils to mark the end of another successful CRED project. They also displayed the literacy and art work from their Pushkin project on the theme of ‘Landscapes’, along with some songs and sketches.
Home and Away
P1 to 4 enjoyed the sunny weather with a trip to the beach at Portballintrae in June. They had a great time looking for creatures in the rock pools, building sandcastles and paddling in the sea.
P5 to 7 visited the Ulster Museum in May to see Takabuti, the Egyptian mummy. While they were there they found all sorts of other interesting things from Armada treasure to dinsosaur bones.
In school ‘Fireman Martin’ came to talk to the P5 class on fire safety whilst everyone benefited from Davy’s day of football skills training. Two P6 children travelled to Stormont to meet MLAs and represent the school at a British Council exhibition to highlight the international resources they offer.
P7 finished off their salmon project with a visit to Bushmills fisheries to see the mature salmon and they were also invited to the opening of the new Village Playpark in Kilrea.
The final accolades of the year were being awarded a silver award for recycling by River Ridge Recycling, which was presented at Cloonavin in Coleraine last Friday and also winning second place in Northern Ireland for their Industry Project, ‘May the Bag be with You’. Seven representatives from the company enjoyed a day to the Odyssey where they had to present their project to the judges and got to see what the other gold award winners had done.
Pretty in Pink
We celebrated the Giro D’Italia coming to Northern Ireland for the first time with a Pink Day in school on Friday 9th May. We dressed in pink, ate pink food and did pink-themed activities. Many of the staff and pupils went to see the bicycles passing through on Saturday which was a great spectacle.
We also marked the 70th anniversary of D-Day on 6th June with a small exhibition and war time dress up day. Thanks to all those parents and friends who brought in interesting wartime objects and photographs. We heard some fascinating stories of local people which made it all the more memorable for the children.
Eco-Warriors
On Thursday 29th May we combined our traditional races with some Eco activities to have our first ever Eco-Sports Night, marking the 20th anniversary of our Eco Flag. Luckily the rain stayed away and after the running, sack and beanbag races there were some fun ones, featuring wheelbarrows, wellingtons and scarecrows. Those who still had energy to burn then tried out the orienteering course or went on a butterfly hunt whilst others enjoyed the barbecue, ice-cream and the frothy coffees on offer. Thanks to the PTA and others who organized the food and fun activities.
Extra-Curricular activities
Several children have been studying music and speech and drama within school and congratulations to all those who have recently passed their exams (and good luck to those still awaiting their results). The staff have also been doing some training this term, on ‘Stop Motion’ animation and the use of a maths resource called Numicon.
