Home Sweet Home
Dozens of parents, friends and relations packed into the assembly hall on Wednesday 24th June to see this year’s P7 perform their play on the theme of ‘Home Sweet Home’. Ably supported by the choral skills of the rest of the school singing about beds, eggs and farmyard animals the pupils provided a great night’s entertainment. Following a short interval Rev. McCormick and Mrs Stinson took to the stage to give their annual reports and the annual cups and awards were then presented by Mrs Gordon, our former cook. Everyone agreed that 2014/15 had been another very busy but successful year. Roll on September!
Out and About
On Friday 12th June P1 to 4 had their trip to Garvagh Forest and then to McIlroy’s poultry farm in Macosquin. They got to see all sorts of interesting things such as the mysterious Garvagh pyramid and some newly hatched chicks and even came home with a chicken each of their own.
P5 to 7 had a staycation with the ‘trip’ coming to them in the form of a Viking Day. They discovered a little of what it must have been like to live in Norway or Sweden over 1000 years ago. There was lots to do, from weaving, building, carrying chainmail, and dressing up to some sword training.
Of course the Vikings weren’t the only visitors this term. A real live fireman came to talk to the P5 class on fire safety and what to do when you hear your smoke alarm, Davy and Ricky put us through our paces on the sports field and Mr Corscadden took P5-6 for orienteering.
P7 also completed their salmon project with a visit to the fisheries in Bushmills. Here they visited the labs and looked for the mature salmon which have returned to the River Bush. They were amazed by the difference between these fish and the ones they had released locally. The final visitor was Gretta from Queen’s University who led a whole school environmental day with bug hunts, pond dipping and worm surveys in the grounds.
Duck Derby and Sports Day
On Thursday 28th May we had our duck derby at David and Ann Laughlin’s farm. Hundreds of ducks had been sold and the £2000 raised has been presented to the Northern Ireland Kidney Research Fund. Thanks to the PTA who organized the barbecue and spent hours wading into the stream to launch and retrieve the ducks.
This was followed by sports day on Friday 29th May when, despite the threat of showers, everyone donned their sports gear and took to the running track. Luckily the rain stayed away for most of the afternoon and after running, jumping, balancing bean bags and eggs on spoons everyone was rewarded with a free ice-cream. The last teamwork challenge of the year will be the Potted Sports on Thursday 25th June.
Several children have been studying music and speech and drama within school. Good luck to all those who have been taking their exams and congratulations to those who have already passed.
Congratulations to everyone in school for achieving a highly commended certificate in the Best Kept School Awards.
Many thanks to all those who have supported us in any way over the last year. Without your continued goodwill and generosity we would not be able to provide such a wide range of additional activities which enhance and extend the more traditional areas of the curriculum.
