Red Letter Day
We were all seeing red on Tuesday 14th February when we left our uniforms at home, brought a £1 donation for PTA funds and came dressed in ‘Red for Romance Day’. For some it was just a token gesture such as red socks, a red hair-band or even red pants (although we didn’t ask anyone to prove that one) or some went the whole hog and dressed in red from head to toe. Mrs Gordon and Mrs Greer also be put on a special Valentine Menu in the dinner hall and if you wanted a table for two you had to book early to avoid disappointment.
Class updates
P1,2 and 3 have been learning about Winter. They have made bird feeders and gone bird watching in Mrs Shiels garden in Woodland Park. She told them about all the different kinds of birds which come to her feeders, like gold finches, blue tits and red hatches.
They also had a winter walk to Woodhall where they explored the woodland and looked for snowdrops and early signs of spring.
Primary 4 & 5 have been learning about space, planets and stars and imagining what it would be like to travel to the moon or meet aliens. They have made rockets and space buggies from junk and have painted pictures of the stars. They have also learned about the names of the planets and researched facts and figures on each one. They have also written stories about a day as ‘Bob, the man on the moon’.
Primary 6 & 7 have also been studying Space. Each group has chosen a topic to research including the Mir space station, humans in space and the development of telescopes. In technology they have been using air propulsion to make model rockets take off and flying saucers fly.
They have also started their annual salmon project. Mark Patterson brought along the salmon roe for them to look after and in a few weeks they will release the fry into a stream, close to the River Bann.
In and out of school
We held our open morning on Saturday 7th January and were delighted with the response. Parents, pupils and staff came in to act as tour guides and demonstrators and the weather was kind so that everyone got a complete tour of the school and the grounds. We saw a lot of new faces and are looking forward to welcoming many of them in September.
This year P6 & 7 pupils from Kilrea and St Columba’s are taking part in a project on local history and the Victorian period sponsored by CRED and they began with a ‘getting to know you’ session in Kilrea Sports Hall where they played ice-breaker games and introduced themselves. The next outing will be to the Ulster American Folk Park where they will stay over night.
Two teams took part in the Credit Union quiz where the P7 team came second and the football team played in the next round of the small schools competition in Castleroe on Wednesday 1st February. Although it was cold at least this time it was dry as at the last match they had to battle on despite the rain.
P4-7 had a visit from Bryson House who gave a presentation on conserving energy around the house. They explained how to cut down on our use of fossil fuels and save money in the process.
We also have a new music tutor in school in the shape of Mr Keith Lyttle from the Ulster Scots Society who is providing tuition in the fiddle. 16 P5-7 pupils have signed up and begin their lessons this week.
On Friday 20th January we welcomed Beth McIlrath from ‘Save the Children’ and Roisin McCaughan and Elizabeth Snelling from the ‘Zomba Action Project’ to accept cheques for £135 each , the proceeds of our carol service. They explained to us how the money would be used to buy much needed resources for children in other parts of the world.
Cash for Clobber raised a massive £440 this term. If you missed this one there will be another collection in April.
