Enrolment is now open for September 2012. If you have a younger child who is ready for school or know of someone who intends to enrol their child, and have not received the forms, please contact Mrs Stinson or Miss Young in the school office. Forms are officially due in by 12.00 noon on 18th January 2012. Alternatively you can come along to our official ‘Open Morning’ on Saturday 7th January from 10-12.
P1,2 &3
P1, 2 & 3 have been studying healthy eating and have created their own ‘Healthy Eating Café’ with a menu of sandwiches and fruit salad. Everyone played their part, from the food preparation staff, the waiters, the managers and of course the customers. They also baked ‘Healthy’ buns using carrots, apples and bananas and sold their produce to the rest of the school. Along with the proceeds of the charity train they donated £35 to ‘Children in Need’.
P4 & 5
Primary 4 & 5 have been learning about Victorian life. They have looked at photographs of houses, clothes and artifacts from the Victorian period and learned about how different life was for children then. They agreed they wouldn’t have liked to climb a chimney, go down a mine or spend many hours a day in a factory. School seems like a better option now.
Now they are finding out how the Victorians spent Christmas and how many of today’s traditions date from that time.
P6 & 7
Primary 6 & 7 have been very creative this term writing stories, making 3-D pictures and designing Christmas trees which light up. They are also looking at Christmas through the ages and have been interviewing their parents and grandparents about their childhood memories. They have heard the sob stories about an apple and an orange in the toe of their stockings.
They are now starting to make home-made decorations for their Victorian Christmas tree from recycled materials.
Extra, Extra!
It’s been a busy month with a lot of visitors. On Friday 11th November the playschool came to visit P1 & 2 and took part in activities on the theme of road safety. P1 –3 also had a visit from Ben Best who led a personal development session with games about working together. On Monday 5th December the class joined a number of other schools at Kilrea Sports Complex for a morning of games and activities.
P4 & 5 were joined by pupils from St Columba’s for a day of art and creativity led by Kilcranny House. Paddy, Charlie and Lotte organised the games and discussions and Mrs Maud Steele brought along the Kilrea Community Quilt and explained how the group had come together to create it. Then everyone had a go at cutting and sticking fabrics to make pictures of their own.
The Dairy Council also gave a talk to P6 & 7 on healthy eating and balanced diets.
On Monday 14th November past pupil, Shannon Smyth came to talk about her visit to the Asha project in New Dehli, India. She wore her sari and showed us photographs and souvenirs from her trip.
Christmas Treats
P1-4 travelled to Ballymoney to see Cinderella and her ugly sisters on Wednesday 30th November.
P5-7 enjoyed Ballymoney High School’s all-singing, all-dancing production of ’Grease’ on Tuesday 6th December. They had a great time and were Ram-a-lam-a-ding-donging all the way home.
All the musicians in school will have the opportunity to display their talents to the rest of the pupils in a special musical assembly on Friday when we will be treated to the strains of violins, clarinets, flutes and tin whistles.
Charity Donations
Many thanks for your continued support of the PTA with the fireside quiz and smartie tube collections.
The fireside quiz raised over £350 and the winners have been notified.
Calendars will be ready for collection soon.
We also donated £150 to the
British Legion Poppy Appeal and £97.50 to the Wings Appeal.
