Moving on up
P1 and 2 are finding out about more things that move on land, sea or in the air. They have compared old and new vehicles and those with wheels and wings as well as doing traffic surveys and creating graphs
Once Upon A Time...
The fairytale theme continues in P3 & 4 with in depth studies of castles, royalty and frogs! They have also been planting beans to see if they can grow their own beanstalk and find some golden eggs.
Women and Children First
P7 completed their projects on the Titanic by designing posters, brochures and newspaper reports about the tragedy and by having debates on who could have been to blame.
P5 & 6 have also continued to work on developing their healthy habits by cooking using local produce, learning about the dangers of smoking, alcohol and drugs and spending a lot of time skipping.
Good Sports
March has been a busy month for our sports teams
Both the girls’ and boys’ teams took part in hockey tournaments this month and both teams finished in third place.
The netball team had their first outing, finishing in fifth place and
the badminton team had a friendly match with Rasharkin before their tournament. They have now challenged the rest of the school to try to beat them in their own inter-class tournament.
Meanwhile the football team have continued to go from strength to strength emerging 1st in their group in the five a-side tournament. The local finals took place on Wednesday 24th March where the Kilrea team were placed 3rd overall, narrowly missing out on a place in the Northern Ireland finals. However they were more successful in the indoor tournament where they were placed 1st and returned home with the trophy. Congratulations to the team and their hard working trainers Mrs Cooper and Mr Crawford.
High Tech Stuff
Three P7 pupils took part in the NEELB technology competition which this year asked them to design and build a windmill. We were delighted when the Kilrea team consisting of Thomas Irwin Thomas Gordon and David Linton were awarded first place and now qualify for the Northern Ireland finals in Belfast in June.
What a month!
Home and Away
Maureen McAuley came to talk to everyone about Road Safety. She taught us the safest way and places to cross the road and why we should always wear our seat belts. Her expertise was very useful as P7 are just beginning their cycling proficiency training.
P1 and 2 have been on their Spring woodland walk and have had fun building huts from the logs they found.
P7 pupils have completed their painting project with pupils from St Columba’s and St Paul’s. The paintings are destined to decorate the fence alongside the school, leading in to the park and we can’t wait to admire their handiwork.
Eco Development
The latest addition to our school grounds has been the creation of a willow tunnel and seating. Many of the pupils had the chance to help build the basic structures and we now look forward to seeing it grow and develop over the coming months. Thanks to Mrs Louise McClean for all her help and guidance.
Book Fair
We had a very successful book week with competitions, a lot of book sales and our fancy dress. Thanks again for all your support.
Chinese banquet
Over 60 parents, staff and friends gathered in the Red Peaches restaurant, Ballymena to enjoy a delicious Chinese banquet on Thursday 18th March. After the meal a number of items were auctioned off and along with the money raised from the raffle a grand total of £1760 was raised towards the purchase of an interactive whiteboard for the P1 and 2 classroom.
