Toy Story
This term P1 and 2 have been talking about toys. They have examined, sorted and painted their toys and even had their very own teddy bears’ picnic. In the last couple of weeks they have been making Christmas cards and decorations, including a beautiful gingerbread house.
Jack Frost
P3 and 4 have finished their WW2 topic with a visit to the war museum in Belfast where they got to try on uniforms, look at war time artefacts and design posters to encourage people to dig for victory. Now they are learning about winter and their classroom is a-glitter with frosty pictures. They have also become the school postal service with daily deliveries to all classes.
Eco-Warriors
P5, 6 and 7 have been looking at environmental issues such as waste disposal, pollution and the causes and effects of global warming. They have also been doing their bit to reduce, reuse and recycle in art by making their own paper and glass painting with Fiona Watters from Coleraine Council.
We were delighted to be awarded our sixth eco-flag for our continued work in recycling and developing our environment. This spring we have plans to develop new vegetable beds and a willow tunnel as additions to our, already excellent, school grounds so all you budding gardeners, be warned. Congratulations to Mr Crawford and the Eco-committee for co-ordinating such a successful project.
Charity Cheques
Over the last couple of months we have raised £98.85 for the Wings Appeal, and supported the Poppy Appeal, the Cedar Foundation and the Northern Ireland Hospice.
The £420 raised from the P7 fireside quiz and ‘Guess the number of sweets’ competition was presented to Rock Ministries and Mwamba Choir from Uganda who visited us earlier in the year.
Many thanks for your generous support for all these charities.
Visitors bearing gifts
Once again Colin Tinsley came to take assembly and tell bible stories before Mr and Mrs Roy Wilson from Rasharkin presented all the P1s with their own bible.
Mrs Pearl Hutchinson presented the school with a copy of the latest Local History publication ‘Faces and Places of Kilrea’ which will be a valuable history resource for many years to come. You can purchase your own copy from a number of local retailers.
We also had a very successful family portrait night with all the slots fully booked.
That’s the way to do it
Children from Kilrea Community Playgroup joined P1-4 on Friday 6th November for a puppet show presented by Action Cancer to promote healthy lifestyles. In the afternoon P5-7 also enjoyed an activity workshop on the theme of keeping healthy.
Sporting Heroes
Kilrea boys’ football team campaign continued with a mixed bag of results on day 2 of their 4-day tournament. With 1 win, 1 loss and 2 draws they now lie in joint second place as they approach day 3.

The Italian Job
Mrs Cooper and Miss Steele hadn’t so much a Roman Holiday as a Milan Meeting in November. During their visit they exchanged brochures, which each of the schools had produced on their own areas, and visited a number of schools in the Muggio area. The trip ended with a visit to Lake Garda, the largest freshwater lake in Italy, and the chance to help harvest olives and see them being transformed into olive oil.
Oh yes it is!
P1-4 attended St Paul’s bi-annual pantomime on Monday 14th December and enjoyed a great day out. By the end of the show the ugly sisters had got their come-uppance, Cinderella had found her Prince Charming and everyone was hoarse with all the singing and shouting.
Not to be outdone P5-7 went to Garvagh High on Wednesday 16th December to see the Wildcats triumph in High School Musical.
Budding Artists
Naomi Kelso-Mason and Conor Agnew had their artistic skills rewarded in this year’s Firework safety competition and Joanna Kelso was also awarded a joint third prize in the British Council postcard competition to illustrate her favourite word in another language.
Christmas Celebrations
The Kilrea Christmas season began with the annual switch on of lights and fireworks display on Saturday 5th December. Thanks to the PTA, who cooked the hotdogs, and to all those who purchased them and contributed to PTA funds.
The annual carol service took place on Wednesday 16th December in St Patrick’s Parish Church. All classes participated with singing, readings and recitations. The offering totalling over £300 will be donated to Save the Children and the Zomba Action Project in January.
A group of musicians and singers from Kilrea Primary will also be entertaining residents of Toberdoney Fold on Thursday 17th December to help them get into the Christmas spirit.
House!
The competition has been very close with loads of points being awarded for good manners and team spirit, but Portna have emerged the winners for both October and November, albeit by a narrow margin.
Don’t Forget!
Last Monday the school choir sang some carols for a recording by BBC Radio Ulster and they can be heard, along with pupils from Culcrow primary, on the Ulster-Scots programme, ‘A kist of words’ on Radio Ulster, Sunday 20th December at 4.00 pm. Don’t forget to tune in.
