Out and About
On Tuesday 9th June P1-4 set off to climb the heady heights of Cave Hill as they visited Belfast Zoo. Our budding zoo-keepers also had an up-close session where they got to see an African hedgehog, a snake, stick insects, a giant snail and a red knee-ed tarantula. They even got to touch some of them – rather them than me!
On Wednesday 10th June it was P5-7’s turn, as they trekked ‘way out west’ to the Ulster-American Folk Park. Having studied the potato famine and migration earlier in the year they now made the journey themselves, from the small whitewashed cottages of Ireland to the log cabins of the New World. They were especially shocked by the shipboard experience with cramped sleeping arrangements and an en suite facility consisting of a bucket under the bed!
Good Game, Good Game
Sports day was held on Friday 5th June and luckily the dry weather held out until all the races were run and everyone had enjoyed their ice-cream.
The year ended with our annual Potted Sports, a day of team games, this year on a Space theme. The mixed teams worked extremely well together and after a fun day of thrills and spills the winning teams were presented with certificates and medals. Points from both days will go towards the House trophy.
And the winner is...
On Wednesday 24th June 2009 P7 took to the stage, supported by the rest of the school, for this year’s show, entitled Space Invaders. They played to a packed house before a brief interval and the presentation of cups and prizes by Mrs Morrison. Congratulations to all the winners and good luck to the P7s as they prepare to move on to their new schools.
Mr McCormick also welcomed Mr Ryan Crawford who will be joining the staff in September to jointly teach P3 & 4 with Mrs Roulston.
Moving On
P7 have been preparing for their next big move with visits to all their chosen schools. They have also attended 2 workshops on keeping safe run by the Scripture Union and the Northern Health and Social Care Trust.
P6 pupils also enjoyed a one day workshop of fun activities at Garvagh High and returned with a selection of art work and some delicious shortbread biscuits.
Changeover
The rest of the school got a taste of their new classes on Monday 29th June when everyone moved up, and the new P1s came to visit.
Race Fever
2009 was the inaugural year of the Kilwacky Races and we were delighted that the PTA entry, The Fairy Thorn Flyer, was among the winners. Created by Mr Ian Davidson and Mr Donald Armstrong and piloted by the latter it sped into second place, aided by the muscle power of Ian and Mr Gary Halliday. Not only that, but it was the joint winner of the fastest speed, being clocked at 29 mph – just within the legal limit. Watch out Jenson Button!
Eco-Matters
The peas, beans and potatoes are all growing well so don’t forget to keep an eye on their progress if you happen to be passing over the summer. With a bit of luck we’ll have some winners at this year’s flower show in September.
House!
Toberdoney was the winning house for April and May but with all to play for everyone pulled out all the stops. After sports day and the potted sports Mrs Cooper was left to do the maths and these points were added to the monthly totals. A huge words of congratulations to Movanagher who were declared the overall winners for 2009 – 2010.
And Finally...
Congratulations to Mrs Stinson who has successfully survived her first year in Kilrea Primary School and thanks to all those parents and friends who have devoted their time and energy to helping us with our many ventures throughout the year. Your support is greatly appreciated. Roll on September!
