Time ‘Marches’ On
This has been a very busy month. Three P7 pupils attended the Technology Challenge, 4 P6 and 7 pupils took part in the Road Safety competition and on the 1st April a group of musicians will visit Toberdoney Fold to entertain the residents.
The boys have been keeping fit by attending a football tournament in Coleraine on Wed 25th, where they came third, and a Tag Rugby event at the University on Thursday 19th, and not to be outdone, the girls attended a hockey tournament on the 18th and came second in a netball tournament on the 20th.A group of parents and staff began a course of lessons on food hygiene and they are now waiting with bated breath for their results.
Fair’s Fair
The book fair took place between 11th and 18th March. During the week we had lots of entertainment. On Thursday 12th Hullaballoo drama company presented the story of Peter Pan, with the help of some very accomplished actors from Kilrea Primary and on Friday we came to school in fancy dress. On Tuesday 17th March we then welcomed the Children’s Cantata who played a wide range of instruments and music. Pupils and parents came along to buy books on Monday 16th and prize winners had the opportunity to spend their vouchers. Once again, many thanks for your continued support.
Sponsored Swim
P6 and 7 swimmers took part in this year’s sponsored swim at Maghera pool. They raised £265 which will go towards Charis – Integrated Cancer Centre which is being opened soon at Lough Fea. Pupils swam in teams and completed more than 50 lengths in the time available. A special mention goes to Adam Alexander who swam 1000 metres solo. Thanks to all the staff and parents who sponsored this event.
A Fishy Tale
On Tuesday 24th P6 and 7 went to David Laughlin’s farm, along with a class from St Columba’s, to release the salmon fry into the river. They also did some river dipping and brought the samples back so they could examine the bugs and beasts at closer quarters.
They hope to follow up this visit with another trip in May, this time to the salmon hatchery.
Visitors
P5 enjoyed 3 lessons from the Scripture Union based on the gospel of Mark and on Thursday 19th P5 and 6 were flying high when Tony Monaghan from Bombardier came to talk to them about planes and flight. All of the children made a plane of their own and launched them at the new Kilrea International Airport. The prize for longest flight went to Stephen Boyd.
Comenius Visit
17 teachers from Italy, Germany, Spain and Slovakia visited Kilrea between 25th and 28th of March. They were welcomed to the school in a special assembly where all the children sang and danced. They were especially impressed with P1-4s Spanish songs. This was followed by a tour of the classrooms and a chance to talk to the pupils and teachers. Over the rest of their stay they visited Garvagh secondary school, an organic dairy farm, the Causeway Coast and Rosie’s cottage. The theme throughout this project is ‘Preserving Our Worlds’ and we look forward to exchanging more pupils work and information at our next meeting in Slovakia in May.
