Kilrea Primary School newsletter from November 2006.
We’ve seen the light! - P1 & 2 have been learning about sound and light and studying all kinds of lamps.
They even tried out an old oil lamp but decided it was too much like hard work.
They have a lot to fit in before Christmas with all their Christmas craftwork and a trip to the library.
Twit-Twhoo’s afraid of the dark? - P3 and P4 have been doing some research on owls and reading about the ‘owl who was afraid of the dark’. In science they have been learning about electricity and safety in the home to help avoid any accidents with the fairy lights.
Violent Eruptions - In P5 & P6 have been learning about volcanoes and earthquakes and what causes these natural disasters. They are also investigating forces like gravity and friction, and finding out which trainers have the best grip!
World Matters - P7 are relieved to have the transfer over and are now getting ready to enjoy the holidays. They are practising their songs and instrumental pieces for the carol service and they have also been continuing their work on recycling by making paper and by glass painting with Fiona Watters from Coleraine Borough Council.
Ballyronan Marina - P5,6 & 7 had a most memorable trip to Ballyronan Marina, led by Mrs Eileen Young and Mr Tommy Collins, who helped us explore this wooded area on the banks of Lough Neagh. As well as learning about trees we went pond dipping and bird watching. Unfortunately the rain followed us all day but this didn’t dampen our spirits and we came home a lot wetter but hopefully wiser!
Floral Demo - Last week’s floral art demonstration was very well attended and thanks must go to all those who sold tickets and, of course, to Mr James Burnside for his wonderful displays. Over £900 was raised and this will help pay for the buses to Cinderella in the Millennium Forum next week. Almost £200 was also raised from the sale of hotdogs at the fireworks display. Thanks again for everyone’s support.
Charity - Our main charity for this year is the Zomba Action Project and supporting our sister school, Mponda. We have already made a good start with your shoes already being dispatched and the P1, 2 & 3’s collection of fir cones. These were sold at the floral demonstration, raising over £50. The P4, 5, 6 & 7 will hold their own bring and buy sale of old toys, books and videos this Friday and all proceeds from that will also go to ZAP.
The proceeds from this year’s carol service will be divided between ZAP and Save the Children who also accept our used stamps. These will be handed over in January along with the cheques so please save all the stamps on your Christmas cards.
Eco-Schools Mayor Mr William King visited the school at the end of October to present us with a picnic bench and seat made from recycled materials. This was in recognition of our hard work to earn our 4th Eco-flag. Now we’re hoping for some good weather to enjoy them! Yellow pages are being collected again. If you have received your new copy please send the old one in to school as soon as possible, as they will be collected within the next ten days.
Football Update - Well done to the boys’ football team who played in the finals of their football tournament in the last week of October. The team emerged joint winners with Garvagh Primary – what a good start to the season!
Top of the House - The house with the most points in October was Toberdoney and for November, Portna. However the total points are all very close so the overall winner is still anyone’s guess!
